A tree map presents a considerable amount of data in a visual format to show you a lot of information at a glance. In this case you’re seeing all of the S&P/TSX Composite stocks in their respective industry sectors, from largest groups (upper-left) to smallest (lower-right). We’ve computed one-week forecasts for each stock, indicated by colour (bright orange, meaning highest likely gain) to dark blue (largest decline expected). The more orange the more up-trending stocks, the more blue, the more decliners. Left-click on the stocks for more info, and right-click to zoom in/out on a sector. The area of the stock rectangle represents consistency. You can reverse whether colour or size represents those two dimensions. If you do, the stocks with negative trends will disappear, and you can concentrate on the winners.

Please note that this feature has been temporarily disabled. The data represented are out of date. As it stands, weekly updates have turned out to be far more time consuming than we anticipated. We’re still really excited about the concept of displaying some of our ”forecasts” this way, so we’re looking into ways of automating the process or finding other software to achieve the same result. For now, just consider this a demonstration of how there are better ways to represent large amounts of data visually than you’ll find in conventional publications.
